FGCU’s shower of 3s lead to rout
Florida Gulf Coast University’s women’s basketball team drained an NCAA single-game high 20 three-pointers on a Division I-record 55 attempts en route to an 87-52 Atlantic Sun win over Mercer Monday night at Alico Arena.
The Eagles’ 20 three-pointers are one short of the NCAA record of 21 set by New Mexico State on Feb. 23, 2002. It also is an A-Sun record. FGCU made 10 in each half, highlighted by a 10-for-21 clip in the final period while outscoring the Bears 50-26.
The Eagles remain one of two unbeaten teams in the nation at 14-0 overall and 7-0 in the A-Sun. The Eagles also stretched their Alico Arena unbeaten streak to 32 games, the third-longest streak in the country behind UConn and Stanford.
n Senior guard Reed Baker, a graduate of Bishop Verot High School, resigned from the Florida Gulf Coast men’s basketball program Monday and will not return for the rest of the season, coach Dave Balza announced in a prepared release.
Baker started 14 games this season and leaves as the Eagles’ second-leading scorer at 14.4 points per game. Baker played his freshman year at Michigan before transferring to FGCU, where he led the Atlantic Sun in free throw percentage each of the last two seasons.
The Eagles are 3-13 overall this season and 0-7 in conference play. They return to the court for a conference battle Thursday at Campbell.
