Jan 18, 2011

Margaret Albirtha Miggins, 79, of Lehigh Acres, died Jan. 15, 2011 at Gulf Coast Medical Center in Fort Myers after a short illness. She was surrounded by her husband, her two sons and friends.

Miggins was born on April 19, 1931 in New York and was the daughter of the late Joseph and Angelina.

She was married in August of 1962 to Sydney Miggins.

She was a licensed registered nurse. Her career spanned six decades and began at her mother’s bedside when she was 11. She gave her mother insulin injections to treat her diabetes.

After she graduated from Morris High School in 1949, she joined the staff at Goldwater Memorial Hospital as a nurse’s aide where she stayed until 1955.

She later joined the staff of Bronx Municipal Hospital in 1956 as a nurse’s aide and later served as a licensed practical nurse (LPN), a registered nurse (RN) and was assistant director of nursing at the time of her retirement in 1995.

She graduated with an associate in applied science degree from Bronx County Community College of the City University of New York in January of 1969 and became a registered professional nurse in October of 1969. Her family said she always made a special effort to encourage nurse’s aides to climb the career ladder as she did.

She is survived by her husband, Sydney Miggins and two sons, Julius Wright Jr. of the Bronx, N.Y., and Reginald Miggins of Allen, Texas, and one grandchild, Celina Angelina.

In addition, she is survived by several nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives and her church family and countless friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her her brother, Jonathan.

Memorial services are pending.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to the First Community Congregational Church, 200 E. Leeland Heights Blvd., Lehigh Acres, Fla., 33936.
