Prep Report: Storm alters 4A-11 soccer

By Staff | Jan 18, 2011

Monday’s stormy weather postponed the girls’ District 4A-11 soccer tournament at Ida Baker to Tuesday.

The opening quarterfinal match between No. 4 seed Fort Myers and No. 5 South Fort Myers started in a light rain, but about 20 minutes later the weather and field conditions worsened and forced suspension of play.

“It was steady, then came harder rain and a couple of lightning strikes along with the tornado watch,” said Baker athletic director Lisa Vazquez. “We talked to all the other coaches and they all agreed to shifting everything until tomorrow (Tuesday).”

The county’s public schools are having midterm exams this week, complicating the timing of the games somewhat. There was no school Monday to observe the Martin Luther King holiday, but schools dismiss early on exam days this week.

“We are trying to keep the semifinals and finals at the same times Thursday and Friday,” said Vazquez.

South Fort Myers had a 1-0 lead on Fort Myers when play was suspended. They will pick up where they left off at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cape Coral High’s Dave Warkentin Field.

At Baker, the defending district champion and No. 3 seed Bulldogs take on the No. 6 Mariner Tritons at 2 p.m., followed at 4 p.m. by No. 2 Estero vs. No. 7 Riverdale, and No. 1 North Fort Myers plays No. 8 Cape Coral at 6 p.m.

The Seahawks played their way into the quarterfinals with a 7-0 shutout victory over Lemon Bay in the tournament’s opening game Saturday.

Christina Hurt scored three goals and Sarah Feakins two goals with two assists to lead the win. Riverdale shut out Cypress Lake 3-0 in other first-round game.

“Best case scenario would have been to get one game in,” said Vazquez, “but this is the best we could do given the circumstances.”

Those circumstances solve some concerns for the respective team coaches, but create others.

“With the field flooded it was too dangerous, too dangerous for the girls,” said North coach Donna Agostinelli. “We will be ready for tomorrow. I’m fine with the time (6 p.m.), but we’re the third game and I’m concerned what that field will look like by then.”

The same goes for opponent, Cape High.

“My only concern is if the field will be playable,” said Seahawks coach Eric Lamboy. “I don’t know what North has been doing, but we had games last week and I would rather keep the girls playing. We’ve improved so much and we look to be a spoiler. It’s district and we can beat anybody. North scored two own-goals on us last time, so we are looking forward to playing North again, and on a neutral field.”

Moving from a late kickoff time to the earlier start raises one concern for the host team.

“We were mentally prepared to play the night game, but now we have to turn around and play in the day right after exams,” said Baker coach Dave Trep-kowski. “It doesn’t change anything about our preparations. I just hope we don’t start out sluggish.

“(Tuesday’s games) needed to be postponed,” he added. “Of all the parents from Fort Myers and South Fort Myers today only one complained about the change. It’s tough with exams, but the kids still should get home in plenty of time to study. The teams I feel bad for at North and Cape, but I suppose they can study some before and after.”

Mariner coach Beth Gedde has no issue with the change, but at least it won’t be raining.

“It gives us no time to prepare anything different between getting out of school at 12 and playing at 2,” Gedde said. “We still face the same team.”

Tuesday’s winners advance to Thursday’s semifinal round, scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m. at Baker. The championship game is 7 p.m. Friday.

There is a college entrance ACT test scheduled for Saturday, causing Bishop Verot to request a change in the time for the championship game of the District 3A-12 Tournament at Island Coast. Seven of Verot’s players will be taking the ACT, so the time of the championship game was changed to 4 p.m.

Tournament host and No. 4 seed Island Coast kicks off the 3A-12 tourney at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday against No. 5 Dunbar with the winner advancing to the semifinals at 4:30 p.m. Friday against No. 1 Verot. No. 3 LaBelle takes on No. 2 Gateway Charter in the first semifinal at 2 p.m. Friday.

Mariner 61, Dunbar 49: The Mariner Tritons were up to the challenge Saturday night in a 61-49 come-from-behind victory at Dunbar.

The Tritons trailed 28-26 at halftime.

“We had a big third quarter, hit a couple of three-balls,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “You get to a point where you start doubting yourself, but we were able to fight through and stretch out our lead by doing a good job of attacking the basket. That opened up our outside shots.”

The fourth quarter was even better, taking a 42-36 lead into the final eight minutes and extending it to the final margin of victory.

“Sam (Guerrier) led us with eight of our 19 points in the quarter,” said Harris. “Tonight we made the plays we needed, made good basketball plays.”

Guerrier finished with a game-high 18 points to lead the Tritons and fellow senior Derick Adams adding 11 points.

Johnell Barnes and James Strawbridge led the tigers with 16 and 10 points, respectively.

The Tritons (12-6) are back in action Thursday night at Cape Coral for a rematch of the Tritons’ 55-54 victory last week when Kendrec Ferrara blocked Justin Mitchell’s shot at the buzzer.
