‘All teams dangerous’ in 4A-11 boys soccer

By Staff | Jan 22, 2011

Talk about wide open tournaments. Consider the boys’ District 4A-11 soccer bash that starts Monday at Cape Coral High’s Dave Warkentin Field.

“Everybody brings a few dangerous scorers,” said host Seahawks coach Aldo Nardiello. “No one comes in without thorns and fangs. There can be lots of surprises. We want to try not to be the headline. What happened in the girls’ district is both a lesson and a warning.”

Despite not being beaten all season in both regular and district games, the Seahawks (17-0-3, 6-0-3) are the No. 2 seed behind Fort Myers. The district champions in the last two seasons tied 0-0 in their “district counter” match on Dec. 3, but the Seahawks defeated the Green Wave 4-0 on Dec. 9, which did not count in the standings.

“The tournament is a new opportunity for all teams,” said Nardiello. “For the top seeds it’s about survival, and for the lower seeds it’s about a fresh chance.”

The four lowest seeds must play their way into the quarterfinal round in Monday’s two first-round matches. No. 8 Estero kicks off against No. 9 North Fort Myers at 5 p.m., followed by No. 7 Ida Baker and No. 10 Lemon Bay at 7 p.m.

Quarterfinal matches are split, two on Tuesday and two on Wednesday. No. 5 Cypress Lake and No. 4 Riverdale play at 5 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by No. 1 Fort Myers against the Estero-North winner from Monday.

The other two quarters on Wednesday sends No. 2 Cape against the Baker-Lemon Bay survivor at 5 p.m., followed by No. 3 South Fort Myers and No. 6 Mariner at 7 p.m.

The winners collide in the semifinals on Friday. The Cape-Baker/Lemon Bay winner meets the South-Mariner winner at 5 p.m., followed at 7 p.m. by the Fort Myers-Estero/North survivor against the Cypress Lake-Riverdale winner.

Semifinal winners advance to the district championship match at 7 p.m. Saturday plus an automatic berth in the state regional playoffs that start with quarterfinal matches the following week.

In District 3A-12 action at Bishop Verot, Nos. 4-5 seeds Dunbar and Island Coast kick off at 6 p.m. Wednesday with the winner advancing to Friday’s semifinals against No. 1 seed Bishop Verot in the 8 p.m. contest. Nos. 2-3 seeds Gateway Charter and LaBelle meet in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. The winners collide in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“Mariner and Ida Baker represent local rivalries for us on top of the district importance,” said Nardiello. “Whenever you play teams a couple of times during the season, the tournament can be challenging. The big thing for us it not to read too much into the result from last week (a tie and a win, respectively). We have to respect the opponent and be well aware how dangerous players like Nick Presti and Daniel Sharkey and the others can be.”
