Bulldog girls win 4A-11 soccer title, 4-2
The Ida Baker Bulldogs claimed the District 4A-11 girls’ soccer championship for the second year in a row with a 4-2 victory Friday night over the Fort Myers Green Wave at Bulldogs Stadium.
As champions, the Bulldogs (22-5-1) earn home field advantage for the regional quarterfinals next Thursday against District 4A-12 runner-up Lely, which lost to champion Barron Collier 3-0 Friday night.
“Back-to-back championships makes it better this time,” said Bulldogs coach Dave Trepkowski. “We persevered through ups and downs and some losses this year. We’ve grown stronger as a team.”
A quick goal in the first 90 seconds by the Bulldogs was disallowed by an offsides infraction, but the pressure kept coming at the Green Wave (15-6-3), who travel to Barron Collier for a regional quarterfinal match.
In the 17th minute of play, the Bulldogs got a ball to go into the net and take the lead for good. Monique Elliott sent a pass from the right wing to the middle for Shannon Pearl, who buried it inside the left post.
The Bulldogs used long lead passes behind the defensive backs all night long to take advantage of the speed of Pearl and Elliott and others, but it was Brittney Herrera who scored the next two goals to open some breathing room. Elliott sent a pass out to Herrera on the left wing and Herrera slipped it inside the left post in the 32nd minute.
Herrera added to the 2-0 lead barely four minutes into the second half as Baker continued the assault. Another pass from Elliott to the left wing reached Herrera, who was taken to the turf near the endline by a defender, but jumped up and sailed a high shot at a steep angle over the keeper and into the far corner of the net.
Six minutes later, junior Brenna Hambsch scored on a 40-yard free kick over everyone, including the keeper, and just under the crossbar to make it a 4-0 Baker advantage.
Minutes later, the Bulldogs had a bit of a letdown. Fort Myers, which had yet to pose a serious scoring threat, got a break and a goal by Abigail McMahon, who took a ricochet ball in front of the goal to get the Wave on the board.
With 10 minutes remaining, Jordan Yandle added the second Wave goal, converting a ball from the right corner on a deflection.
Baker’s domination included a 20-6 margin in shots on goal and 31-9 overall.
Bulldogs keeper Payton Van Horn stopped four shots while Wave keeper Michelle Andrade had 14 saves.
