Girls’ 3A-12 soccer top seeds advance
Bishop Verot scored its third mercy-rule shutout of Island Coast in girls’ soccer, the latest one a 9-0 win Friday in the semifinals of the District 3A-12 Tournament at Island Coast.
The top-seeded Vikings play No. 2 seed Gateway Charter at 4 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.
Gateway Charter advanced with an 8-0 win over LaBelle in Friday’s other semifinal.
“I’m proud of the effort our girls put forth all year,” said Gators (5-15) coach Tammy Bayly. “We are looking forward to next season.”
Kelly Williamson was the first to score as the Vikings raced to a 5-0 lead in the first six minutes. McKenzie Duquette collected four goals, Kady Otzko had three goals and Talia Barraco added one goal. Ashley Lofgren had two of the team’s five assists. Goalkeeper Chryssie Gibson made just one save in the 40-minute match.
“We were coming off a big win against Fort Myers,” said Vikings coach Randy Zavada. “I think that made a big difference.”
The Vikings and Griffins split their regular-season series, each winning on their own field. Saturday’s tiebreaker will be on a neutral field, but they could meet again in the regional playoffs that begin next Thursday.
Boys Soccer
Cape Coral 3, Evangelical Christian 0: Ron Lind scored two goals and Paolo Acosta added one as Cape Coral wrapped up regular season soccer play with a victory at Evangelical Christian.
The Seahawks completed the school’s first ever undefeated regular season at 18-0-3.
Goalkeeper Daniel Villamil had a busy night with 12 saves to preserve the Seahawks shutout.
Kayck Freire and Caio Amaral assisted on Lind’s goals. Acosta’s tally came on a penalty kick, giving the Seahawks a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Cape hosts the District 4A-11 Tournament that starts Monday. The Seahawks have a bye into the quarterfinals on Wednesday when they face the winner between Monday opponents Ida Baker and Lemon Bay.
Ida Baker 2, Fort Myers 1: Nick Presti and Daniel Sharkey scored second-half goals to lift Ida Baker past Fort Myers.
Goalkeeper Rush Manterola made 10 saves for the Bulldogs (10-10-1), who open District 4A-11 Tournament play at 7 p.m. Monday against Lemon Bay.
North Fort Myers 2, Mariner 2: Juan Rincon scored both Mariner goals in the first half, but North rallied in the second to settle for a tie.
John Teeter had one assist and goalkeepers Matt Brust shared by halves with a total of five saves.
The Tritons ( 13-8-4) face South Fort Myers Wednesday in the District 4A-11 quarterfinals.
Boys Basketball
Mariner 61, Island Coast 26: Mariner defeated Island Coast with rebounding and defense Friday.
Derick Adams hit a season high 18 points to lead the Tritons, backed by Sam Guerrier with 14 points and eight rebounds and Kendrec Ferrara with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
The Tritons (14-6) play at Charlotte Monday while the Gators (11-9) host South Fort Myers.

Mariner 45, Cape Coral 41: Mariner made it a season sweep of Cape Coral with Thursday’s victory. Mariner edged Cape in the first meeting Jan. 11 55-54 when Kendrec Ferrara blocked Justin Mitchell’s jumpshot at the buzzer.
The score was tied 29-29 to start the fourth quarter. The Seahawks (10-10) had a six-point lead with five minutes to play, but the Tritons (13-6) went on an 8-0 run and took the lead for good just inside the four-minute mark. The Tritons shot 10-of-11 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Ferrara topped the Tritons with 15 points, seven rebounds and blocked four shots. Justin Emmons added nine points to go with 10 rebounds to just miss a double-double.
