Prep Report: Verot girls record 16th straight soccer title
When it comes to girls’ soccer domination, the Bishop Verot Vikings just turned Sweet 16.
The Vikings claimed their 16th consecutive district championship Saturday with a 5-0 decision over Gateway Charter at tournament host Island Coast. It is the seventh straight title with Randy Zavada as the Vikings’ coach.
The District 3A-12 champion Vikings (12-3-3) scored all five of their goals in the first half against the wind and coasted the rest of the way. Goalkeeper Chryssie Gibson made four saves in the first half while Cailyn Rizzo tended the net in the second half and made one save.
The Vikings host Bradenton Southeast at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Region 3-3A quarterfinal round.
The Griffins kicked off, but the Vikings soon took possession and charged the net. Kelly Williamson knocked in what proved to be the game-winning goal with just 47 seconds played. It was the first of two goals for Williamson.
It was another 15 minutes before Kady Otzko scored the second goal. Otzko finished with three goals while McKenna Duquette contributed two assists with one apiece by Rebecca Abernethy and Ashley Lofgren.
Gateway Charter must travel to Sarasota Thursday to face Cardinal Mooney in the regional quarterfinal round.
