Estero holds off North, 3-2
The North Fort Myers Red Knights tried to extend their season one more game, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game only drop a 3-2 decision to Estero Monday in the opening game of the boys’ District 4A-11 soccer tournament at Cape Coral’s Dave Warkentin Field.
The loss ends the season for the Red Knights (5-10-2) while No. 8 seed Estero advances to the quarterfinal round to face No. 1 seed Fort Myers at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The Wildcats dominated early play, scoring their initial goal 75 seconds into the game. North failed to clear a ball that was batted around inside the box by several defenders before winding up on the foot of Luis Sosa, who ripped a shot past North keeper Roberto Ordonez, who finished with 10 saves.
Sosa scored a second goal in the 33rd minute when defender Chris Sloat blasted a length-of-the-field ball over and through North’s defense that Sosa finished in the net.
In the final minute of the first half, North got on the board. After making three throw-ins along the right sideline to advance from deep in their own end, Hagerson Damas sent a pass just inside the box to Ben Hamilton, whose shot went into the net just under the crossbar.
“We played poorly in the first 10 to 15 minutes,” said Red Knights coach Josh Neff. “After that we kind of settled down. We had plenty of opportunities, which is the way our whole season went.”
Casey Perkowski lined up for an indirect kick just outside the center circle 10 minutes into the second half. His kick found Eric Carruega, who buried the ball in the net to tie the game.
Play got a bit rough after that with several yellow cards displayed and the Knights were called for six offsides penalties trying to chase down long kicks on scoring opportunities.
Estero missed a golden opportunity in the 28th minute when a shot dribbled past Ordonez, who had pulled away from the goal to field the ball. It glanced harmlessly off the outside edge of the right post.
The Knights were not as lucky a minute later when the Wildcats made a fast charge down the field. On the dead run, Sosa scored his third goal of the game from just inside the box on the left side. It was the Wildcats’ first shot on goal of the second half, and proved to be the game-winner.
“It took too much out of us trying to come from behind,” said Neff.
Estero had a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal and 18-16 overall.
