Prep Report: Tritons advance with 4-2 win
Playing like there was no tomorrow, the Mariner Tritons applied relentless defensive pressure that paid off in a 4-2 victory over South Fort Myers Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the boys’ District 4A-11 Tournament at Cape Coral High.
“This was one of our better games that we have played,” said Tritons coach Martin Cardenas. “We made the least amount of mistakes and played hard all night.”
That effort earns the No. 6 seeded Tritons (14-8-4) a berth in the tournament semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday night against Cape Coral. No. 1 seed Fort Myers meets No. 5 Cypress Lake in the 7 p.m. semifinal match.
Lucas Orellana and David Steeb scored goals for the Tritons in the first half, which ended in a 2-2 deadlock.
Tim Thomas fired a ball that was deflected by South’s goalkeeper. On the right side Orellana picked up the carom and buried it inside the right post for the initial score.
After South tied the game barely three minutes later, Steeb dribbled 40 yards up the left sideline and fired a short angle shot past the keeper for a 2-1 lead. Again, South countered with a tying goal a few minutes later.
Ten minutes into the second half, Steeb was fouled inside the penalty box. Juan Rincon converted the penalty kick for a 3-2 lead the Tritons never relinquished. Rincon added a second goal later in the half.
“That was a combination play we work on with three touches inside the 18 and Rincon scored from the six,” said Cardenas.
Steven Kong, John Teeter, Patrick Lewis and Lara all contributed to the Tritons’ tight defensive effort. Goalkeeper Matt Brust made seven saves.
