Prep Report: Baker girls beat Lely, 7-1

By Staff | Jan 28, 2011

The Ida Baker girls’ soccer team is headed back to the Class 4A regional semifinals for the second year in a row, and a rematch with the team that knocked them out of the postseason a year ago.

Baker scored three goals in the first 17 minutes Thursday night to knock Lely back on its heels. The Bulldogs dominated play throughout, offensively and defensively, en route to a 7-1 victory in the Region 3-4A quarterfinals at Bulldogs Stadium.

In Naples, Barron Collier (17-3-3) edged Fort Myers 1-0 in the quarterfinal round to advance to Tuesday’s rematch with the Bulldogs.

“We just want to get one more than last year,” said Bulldogs coach Dave Trepkowski. “Play was a bit sloppy in the first half tonight, but we walk away with a victory and will focus on next Tuesday night.”

The Bulldogs (23-5-1) scored three goals on their first five shots on goal. Junior Mary Farella started the scoring at the three-minute mark when she found the net on a free kick just outside the penalty box at a 45-degree angle from the right wing. The low shot surprisingly slipped untouched through defenders and teammates. Farella finished with two goals and a bunch of defensive plays in the middle.

Junior Brittney Herrera put a reverse move on a defender along the left sideline at the 15-minute mark and sent a high shot over the Lely keeper’s head and into the far corner of the net for a 2-0 Baker lead.

Herrera (one goal, one assist) also had a hand in the Bulldogs’ final goal, sending a corner kick from the right corner across the middle to Farella, who redirected it inside the far post.

Junior Autumn Yesh made it 3-0 at the 17-minute mark, working a left-to-right pass play with sophomore Shannon Pearl and scoring from 10 yards out.

Lely made it 3-1 in the 23rd minute on a freakish goal. Amanda Lopez sent a corner kick at the near post chest high for usually sure-handed Baker keeper Payton Van Horn (five saves). This time the ball glanced off her hands and into the net. It was the only shot on goal by Lely in the first half.

It also was the closest the Trojans (15-5-3) came to scoring all night. They were limited to six shots on goal and 10 total shots. Leading scorer Ciera Abundez was shut down. She only broke into the open once, in the first half, when she skidded a shot across in front of the goal from the right side and out of bounds on the left side of the net.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, took 16 shots on goal and 31 overall.

Sophomore Monique Elliott (one goal, one assist) dribbled the ball up the middle uncontested at the 33-minute mark and beat the charging keeper, Beatriz Reza, who was still limping after making a save at the left post only minutes before. Lely then changed keepers for the rest of the game. The goal lifted the Bulldogs to a 4-1 lead at halftime.

On a chilly evening, the Bulldogs put the game on ice with three more goals in the second half, one by sophomore Ashleigh Weaver, one by Pearl and Farella’s second goal inside the final minute.

“The girls are looking forward to playing Barron Collier again,” said Trepkowski, “but I just want to get us ready for Tuesday night. It would be nice if we hosted Fort Myers on our field, but playing Collier down there on the turf is nice too.”

Tuesday’s Region 3-4A semifinal is a rematch of last year when Collier handed the Bulldogs their only defeat of the season 4-1. The teams played each other earlier this season with Collier winning 1-0.

Region 3-3A: Bishop Verot scored three goals in each half to defeat Bradenton Southeast 6-0 Thursday in the regional quarterfinal match at Viking Stadium.

McKenna Duquette had three goals to go with two assists to lead the Vikings (13-3-3). Kady Otzko added two goals and Rebecca Abernethy had one goal. The Vikings outshot Southeast 24-2.

Cailyn Rizzo and Chryssie Gibson each served a half as goalkeeper with one save apiece.

The Vikings host Sarasota Cardinal Mooney, which defeated Gateway Charter 4-0, in the regional semifinals Tuesday night.
