Island Coast roared to a big lead early and withstood a late comeback bid to defeat North Fort Myers 53-45 Friday night.

“We jumped on them pretty good,” said Gators coach Greg Coleman. “They hung around until the last three or four minutes when they made a run and cut it to six points.”

The Gators could afford to hold the ball and force the Red Knights to go to a full-court press and finally into fouling. The Gators converted free throws in the final 1:30 to stave off the charge.

“We were fired up for senior night and all,” said Coleman.

Tim Dal Bon topped all scorers with 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Gators. Terrell Griffin pulled down 10 rebounds.

Andrew Malaise topped the Red Knights with 14 points.

The Gators (12-13) turn their focus to the District 3A-12 Tournament Tuesday when they face Dunbar.

“This was a good tuneup for the district tournament,” said Tritons coach James Harris. “It was survival of the fittest. (Collier) is a very good team and any time you hold a team with 20 wins to just 33 points you’ve done a good job.”

The Tritons (17-7) look ahead to their quarterfinal game in the District 4A-11 Tournament Wednesday against either North Fort Myers or Estero.
