Prep Report: Baker tops Cape 60-50 in district quarterfinal

By Staff | Feb 9, 2011

Ida Baker broke open a tight game with a 10-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter to open a lead on the way to a 60-50 victory over Cape Coral Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the District 4A-11 boys’ basketball tournament at Fort Myers High.

The win advances the No. 4 seeded Bulldogs (12-12) to the semifinal round at 7 p.m. Friday against No. 1 seed Fort Myers, which got past Riverdale 72-63.

The Bulldogs, who had trouble knocking down shots in the first half, found the range in second half. They also stepped up the tempo in the second half until the Seahawks (13-12) were forced to foul in the final minutes during a comeback bid.

The Bulldogs converted all 10 of their free throw chances in the fourth quarter to finish the game 12-for-12 at the line.

Senior Shaun Manego hit four of the free throws in the final minutes while Angel Inchausti, Michael Richardson and Christian Davis added two apiece. Manego finished with a game-high 17 points, plus six assists, David added 14 points and Inchausti netted 13 points to go with four steals.

Richardson and Phil Deems each pulled down 12 rebounds to go with eight points apiece.

“We could not get the ball in the basket the second half,” said Seahawks coach Mark Rinehart. “It wasn’t good in the first half, but in the second half it got worse instead of better.”

Only senior James McIntyre hit double figures in scoring with 10 points for the Seahawks, who could get no closer than three points in the final minutes. J.J. Bailey and David Flynn both finished with eight points.

The tournament quarterfinals continue Wednesday with Cypress Lake and Lemon Bay tipping off at 5 p.m., followed by No. 2 seed Mariner and North Fort Myers at 7 p.m. The winners collide in the early semifinal game Friday.
