By Staff | Feb 13, 2011

Three wrestlers from Mariner and one each from Ida Baker and Cape Coral qualified for next weekend’s state meet by finishing in the top four at the Region 2A-3 meet Saturday at Charlotte High School.

Mariner senior Basil Minto continued his unbeaten streak (47-0) by winning all four of his matches to capture the regional championship in the 171-pound weight division. It will be his second consecutive trip to the state meet.

Teammates Brett Hurt (145) and Nick Maynard (160) both qualified by finishing third in the divisions. Each wrestled five matches over two days. It is Maynard’s first trip to the state meet and second for Hurt.

The Tritons placed seventh in the team standings out of 31 schools competing at the regional.

Brandon Gadad of Ida Baker placed second in the 112-pound division to qualify as did heavyweight Donnie Dupont of Cape High.

The state meet is Friday and Saturday at Lakeland.
