Prep Report: Cape batters North, 12-4

By Staff | Feb 17, 2011

According to Cape Coral Seahawks coach Mike Gorton, hitting has not been a problem in the first two games, but timely hitting at times has been.

The Seahawks bats came alive in the later innings Wednesday night, finishing with 10 hits total, in a 12-4 victory over North Fort Myers at Terry Park in the Early Bird Tournament.

“They (North) got two runs in the fourth inning and that was a wake-up call,” said Gorton. “We started swinging the bats better after that. We just chipped away and chipped away early on.”

Senior right-hander Stefan Groening pitched three innings with three strikeouts to pick up the win, his first.

“He pitched well and got a lot of first-pitch strikes,” said Gorton. “That is key in baseball, especially for him.”

Cain Spangler led the Seahawks’ offense, going 3-for-3 with two doubles. Koji Spangler added two hits.

North takes on Estero Friday in the third round of the Early Bird.

The Seahawks (1-1) have a bye for the third round. Their next game is a rematch with North on Tuesday in their District 4A-11 opener.
