Island Coast blanks Ida Baker 2-0

By Staff | Feb 25, 2011

Devin Siriani singled with two out to drive in the first run in Island Coast’s 2-0 victory at Ida Baker Thursday night.

Siriani, a reserve pressed into service to fill an injury at second base, came through with runners at second and third base. He dropped a single into right field in the fourth inning to send Ryne Manka across the plate with what proved to be the game-winning run. Tanner Renegar trotted home a few pitches later on a wild pitch to the backstop.

It wasn’t a good night for the Gators on the basepaths. They had two runners caught stealing second base, another was out at home trying to score on a wild pitch and two others were forced out on infield groundouts.

“They (Baker) were one hit away from getting back in the game,” said Gators coach Clinton Montgomery. “It wasn’t pretty, but we are 4-1 and get out of her with a win.”

The Bulldogs only got two hits off junior Pablo Matos (3-0), who pitched 5 2/3 innings and issued two walks while striking out five.

The Bulldogs were one play from not giving up a run in the fourth inning. With two out and no one on base, Manka ripped a shot down the third base line that glanced off the glove of a diving Caleb Farmer. Renegar drew the last of five walks issued by Baker’s Michael Watson. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Siriani’s run-scoring single.

Likewise, the Gators were one out away from the win when Watson’s screamer down the third base line glanced off Jordan Moody’s glove, putting Bulldogs on first and second with two out.

Kameron Gellinger, the Gators’ third pitcher of the night, then induced Skyler Holt to fly out to left field to end the game.

“You can’t win a game if you don’t hit,” said Bulldogs coach Ryan Jackson. “Our pitching has been solid, but that is the story of our season. Our record does not reflect how outstanding our pitching has been. That’s all part of being a young program.”

Both teams are back on the diamond Friday night. North Fort Myers visits Island Coast and Community School of Naples visits Baker.
