Prep Report: Cape raps Fort Myers 14-5
The Cape Coral Seahawks erupted for 18 base hits and scored at least one run in each of the six innings they batted Friday night in a 14-5 rout of District 4A-11 rival Fort Myers.
The Seahawks led 9-0 before the Green Wave got their bats warmed up for four runs in the fifth inning.
“We are averaging 10, 11 hits a game,” said Seahawks coach Mike Gorton. “A lot of guys hit the ball well tonight with 18 hits. We also left 13 runners on the bases, which you don’t want to do, but with 14 runs you can’t be too mad about that.”
Five Seahawks collectively drove in 11 of the 14 runs. Cain Spangler drove in three runs with three hits to lead the quintet. Brad Kopale, Koji Spangler, Brett Hobaugh and Luke Spangler each drove in two runs with multiple base hits.
Cody Carroll had Cape’s only triple in the game.
Junior Derek Pandolfi (1-0) struck out seven batters during his 4 1/3 innings. He left during the Green Wave’s four-run uprising. Stefan Groening pitched the final 2 2/3 innings to preserve the win.
“Fort Myers came back and showed some fight with their big inning,” said Gorton. “Then we answered with three runs of our own.”
The Seahawks (4-1) visit Dunbar on Monday.
