Walkoff HR tops Tritons, 5-4

By Staff | Mar 12, 2011

It was a roller coaster kind of night for the Mariner Tritons.

After the Tritons gained a 3-0 lead, the Fort Myers Green Wave scored four unanswered runs on the way to a 5-4 victory over the District 4A-11 rival Tritons Friday night.

Kevin Cavanagh (2-for-4) doubled to lead off the Tritons’ sixth inning and scored the tying run on an RBI single by Ryan Hutson (2-for-3).

Justin Gubelman (2-2), who had surrendered just four hits and struck out 11, served up a one-out walkoff home run ball to the Wave’s Brendon Sanger in the bottom of the seventh inning. The blast also made a winner of Sanger, who pitched just over one inning in relief.

The loss puts the Tritons (7-3) at 2-2 in district play. They travel to Sarasota Monday to face Coral Springs in the opening round of the four-day Sarasota Classic.

In the fourth inning the Gators loaded the bases with no one out, but failed to add to their 1-0 lead at the time. An inning-ending double play halted the rally.
