Island Coast sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning Thursday night to score six runs with only one out to finish off South Fort Myers 10-0.
The Gators collected nine base hits to back the four-hit, six-strikeout performance of junior Pablo Matos (5-1).
Matos gave up a leadoff double to South’s Joey Walker on his first pitch, but got out of the early jam with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout. That was the start of retiring eight batters in a row before Walker cracked a two-out double in the third inning.
Trailing 3-0 with one out in the fourth, the Wolfpack bunched three straight singles to load the bases in their first serious scoring threat. It was their last as Forrest Hunter grounded into an inning-ending double play.
“That was the turning point in the game,” said Gators coach Clinton Montgomery. “We had no errors and only walked one batter. We finally put a team away for a change.”
The Gators got on the board first. Kameron Gellinger walked to lead off the first inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Taylor Renegar and Chase Vogelbach singled, with Gellinger scoring on Vogelbach’s hit. With two out, Cole Ondrejka doubled to the gap in right-center to drive in two runs for a 3-0 lead.
A single and a walk to open the fifth set the stage for the Gators’ game-ending rally. Senior Jordan Moody’s sacrifice fly to center plated the first run.
That ended the night for South starting pitcher Zach Bailey. Jack Kelly came in, but did not retire a batter before being relieved by Jordan Kerr.
Kyle Harding’s pinch-hit single to left drove in two runs. A single and a hit-batter loaded the bases for Gellinger, who drew a run-scoring walk for the fourth run of the inning.
Junior Randy Petito’s drove in the final two runs with a walkoff single to right.
