Prep Report: Tritons fall short, 6-3

By Staff | Mar 26, 2011

Unbeaten Lemon Bay got a two-run jump on Mariner in the first inning Friday night, but had to rally in the seventh inning to come away with a 6-3 victory over the Tritons.

Samantha Rapp erased the two-run deficit with a two-run homer to center field to bring the Tritons back in the key District 4A-11 contest.

“We left the bases loaded a couple of times,” said Tritons coach Donna Coleman, “but the girls did not roll over and give up.”

It wasn’t until they rallied for three runs in the seventh inning that the Manta Rays felt like they had some breathing room.

“They had a bunch of speed at the top of their lineup,” said Coleman. “They didn’t hit the ball that hard, using a lot of bunts against us.”

The Tritons came up with one run in their last at-bat to close the final margin to three runs.

The Tritons (9-7) play at Lehigh Monday to make up a previously rained out game.

Mariner 9, Lemon Bay 5: Charlie Klein connected for three hits and drove in two runs while senior Justin Gubelman scattered eight hits and struck out six to send Mariner to a District 4A-11 victory over Lemon Bay.

Rallies were the story of this game. Lemon Bay rallied for three runs to open the game only to have Mariner rally for five in the first to take the lead.

The Manta Rays rallied to knot the score 5-5 in the second, but that is as close at they would get. The Tritons rallied for three runs in the fourth to seal the win.

Alex Santana’s two-out triple in the first ignited the Tritons’ five-run outburst. Klein singled to drive in the first run and Gubelman finished it off with a two-run single.

In the fourth, Walter Cleary was hit by a pitch with one out. Then, with two out, Santana was intentionally walked to bring up Kevin Cavanagh, who singled to score two runs. The third run scored on one of the Manta Rays’ four errors.

Gubelman lasted five innings before giving way to Santana, who pitches one scoreless inning. Cleary pitched a scoreless seventh to end it.

The Tritons (10-6, 4-2 district) host North Fort Myers Tuesday.

Brady scattered six hits and struck out 11. Leading 3-2 with two runners on in the fifth inning, Brady struck out two batters to end the threat.

He fanned four of the next six batters to close out the game and pick up his third win of the season.

Tyler Cardini (2-for-4) doubled in the first inning to drive in Baker’s first run and Justin Pinto singled home the second run. Michael Watson scored the game-winning run in the fifth inning on a bases-loaded walk.
