Prep Report: I-Coast tags Cape on 1 hit
Sophomore Tanner Renegar was on a pitch limit when he took the mound for the Island Coast Gators Friday night. He was so sharp with his control that he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a one-out hit to Cape Coral’s Cody Carroll.
Renegar finished the one-hitter with six strikeouts to lead the Gators to a 4-1 victory.
“It was supposed to be a bullpen game,” said Gators coach Clinton Montgomery. “I wanted to hold him to 80 pitches and hand it over to the bullpen, but he threw 86 pitches the whole game.”
The win is the seventh in a row for the Gators (15-2) and 12th win in the last 13 games.
The Gators had help scoring their first two runs. Errors on back-to-back ground balls put F.T. Corso and Cole Ondrejka on base with one out. A fielder’s choice ground ball hit by Taylor Renegar failed to get Ondrejka at second base, leaving the bases loaded.
That opened the door for Jordan Moody’s two-run double to left. A fielder’s choice ground ball to short nailed Renegar at home for the second out. With Ryne Manka at the plate, Vogelbach tried a delayed steal to draw a throw to second, but the throw home got Moody trying to score.
“We didn’t hit the ball well,” said Seahawks coach Mike Gorton. “You can’t have those kind of errors against a good team. We kind of shot ourselves in the foot.”
In the sixth inning, the Gators added two insurance runs. Taylor Renegar singled to lead off the inning and Moody moved him over with a sacrifice bunt attempt. Vogelbach drove in one run with a single and Randy Petito added the second run on a sacrifice fly.
“It was still a game until the sixth inning,” said Montgomery. “I thought Cape had some momentum after throwing out two runners at the plate and a pickoff at first, but Tanner took control.”
The Gators play at Barron Collier Tuesday while the Seahawks (10-7) host Mariner.
