Island Coast’s win streak snapped

By Staff | Apr 7, 2011

Island Coast had its eight-game winning streak snapped Wednesday night with a 2-0 loss to Sarasota Riverview.

A solo home run in the fifth inning did all the damage necessary, but Riverview added an insurance run in the seventh.

The Gators’ Tanner Renegar was locked in a scoreless pitching duel when the homer cleared the fence. He allowed just five hits while striking out six and no walks for either pitcher. The Gators were limited to three singles.

“Tanner pitched well enough to win, but it just was not our night,” said Gators coach Clinton Montgomery.

The Gators (16-3) are idle until the Bud Roth Memorial Tournament next week.

In games played Tuesday:

Mariner 5, Cape Coral 1: Nothing about Mariner’s victory over Cape Coral was pretty, or outstanding, or even pleasing to the respective coaches.

Quite the opposite.

“The team that made the least mistakes, the fewest errors, won this game,” said Seahawks coach Mike Gorton. “We made more. Our Achilles heel all season has been errors and leaving too many runners in scoring position.”

“We were less horrible than they were tonight, that’s all we were,” said Tritons coach Steve Larsen. “No disrespect toward Cape, but I’d like to say we were better when we win a game. We did not prove tonight we were better than they are. This win did not do us much good.”

Jason Carmichael pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 13 strikeouts for the Tritons, but issued five walks and hit three batters.

“Yes, he pitched a one-hitter, but there were baserunners galore,” said Larsen.

The Seahawks stranded five of seven baserunners in scoring position. The Tritons stranded six, had two picked off first base and two thrown out at home plate on back-to-back plays in the sixth inning.

With one out in the second, Walter Cleary walked. He should have been out at second base on Ryan Hutson’s potential double-play ground ball to short, but a wild throw to second allowed Cleary to score the first run of the game. After Kyle Yankovich walked, Carmichael singled to left to drive in Hutson for a 2-0 lead.

Cape (10-8) cut the lead in half in the third when Brad Kopale led off with a single to center, the Seahawks’ only hit off Carmichael. He stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on a wild pitch.

Cleary drew a leadoff walk in the sixth. He tried to score on Hutson’s double to the base of the fence in left-center, but was thrown out at the plate. Hutson tried and failed to score from third on a wild pitch.

The Tritons (13-6, 6-2 district) host Cypress Lake Friday night.
