Kalamazoo Wings top Florida Everblades 4-1, series tied
There was no follow-up defensive performance Wednesday night by the Florida Everblades, who lost Game 2 of their first-round playoff series to the Kalamazoo Wings 4-1 at Germain Arena.
The best-of-five series is tied 1-1 as it shifts to Kalamazoo for Games 3 and 4 Friday and Saturday nights.
Everblades coach Greg Poss clearly was upset with the poor effort.
“We have to learn to have short memories because this is the playoffs now,” he said. “Every time we play a good game, we follow it with a (horrible) first period (the next game) … It’s just one of these days we need to learn our lesson, or we won’t have the chance to learn that lesson anymore.”
The Wings jumped all over the Blades early and often Wednesday. The first of three first-period goals came just 2:23 into the contest when the Wings’ Brian McGuirk beat Blades net-minder Bobby Goepfert.
The Wings maintained the pressure throughout the period never allowing the Blades (38-31-5 overall) to get into the defensive sets they used to win Game 1 Tuesday night.
As a result, the Wings scored two more times in the final four minutes to set the tone for the remainder of the night.
Goepfert (21 saves) was pulled in favor of Mike Zacharias 11:12 into the second period after giving up the fourth goal.
“It happens,” Goepfert said of being pulled. “I don’t like to give up goals, but it was more about wanting to change up things.”
The 4-0 score stood to start the final period when the Blades found some offensive life. Opening with 1:16 left on a power play, the Blades looked to get back in the game.
It was nearly four minutes into the period when the Blades finally scored on Eric Olimb’s first playoff goal.
