Big inning propels Miracle to 4-0 start
The Fort Myers Miracle improved to 4-0 to start the Florida State League season for the first time since 2006 with a 6-5 win Sunday over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Hammond Stadium.
The Miracle jumped out to an early 5-0 lead by sending 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the third inning. With one out and two runners aboard, Nick Romero singled up the middle on a first-pitch fastball from Hammerheads starter Edgar Olmos to score Aaron Hicks from second base.
First baseman Nate Hanson extended the lead to four runs with a towering three-run homer over the left field fence. Hanson’s home run is his first of the season after cranking 11 a year ago with the Miracle. They tagged Olmos for another run when Jhonathan Goncalves earned a walk with the bases loaded.
Down by five runs, the Hammerheads started chipping away at the Miracle lead. In the top of the fourth inning, Sergio Pedroza sent a full-count pitch from Miracle starter Brad Stillings out of Hammond Stadium, hugging the right field line for a solo home run.
Stillings then issued a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt before Jupiter shortstop Jose Torres blooped a single into center field plating Kyle Jensen. In the sixth, the Hammerheads tallied two more runs on an RBI groundout by outfielder Jose Duarte and a run-scoring single by first baseman Jaime Ortiz.
The Hammerheads dissolved the Miracle lead completely in the top of the seventh inning when red-hot Kyle Jensen smacked a solo homer off of Miracle reliever Jhonathan Garcia.
Tied 5-5, the Miracle battled back to complete the sweep of the Hammerheads scoring the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Jupiter reliever Ramon Bejamin replaced fellow reliever Graham Johnson after a leadoff walk to Chris Hermann. Miracle catcher Dan Rohlfing laid down a splendid sacrifice bunt to move Hermann into scoring position. After a groundout by Steven Liddle, third baseman Anderson Hidalgo hit a shallow fly down the right field line. A seemingly harmless play, Hammerheads right fielder Sergio Pedroza lost the ball in the sun, dropping a few feet to his left and allowing Hermann to score.
After regaining the lead, Garcia retired the Hammerheads in order in the eighth and Bruce Pugh received the call in the ninth. Featuring sharp command of his fastball and cutter, Pugh made quick work of Jupiter in the final inning, allowing just one hit and striking out two including the dangerous Kyle Jensen to pick up his second save.
Garcia (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Miracle, throwing 2 1/3 innings and giving up three hits, a run, and striking out three. Stillings went 4 innings yielding two earned runs on four hits and a pair of strikeouts.
Johnson (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Hammerheads. Olmos started the game lasting just 2 2/3 innings and giving up five runs.
The Miracle (4-0) welcome the St. Lucie Mets (2-1) to Hammond Stadium Monday evening to kick off a three game series. Twins’ first round pick (2010) Alex Wimmers will take the mound for his first start of the season.
