Mets snap Miracle win streak
Alex Wimmers struggled in his first start of the season, exiting in the first inning without recording an out Monday night as the Fort Myers Miracle lost to the St. Lucie Mets 9-2 at Hammond Stadium.
The loss snaps the Miracle’s four-game season-opening winning streak.
Wimmers (0-1), the Twins’ first-round draft pick in 2010, issued six consecutive walks, threw three wild pitches and was charged with four runs.
Mets hitters Stefan Welch and Juan Lagares earned RBI walks while Rafael Fernandez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. They pushed the lead to five runs in the top of the second inning. Matt den Dekker led off the second with a double down the left field line off Miracle reliever Edgar Ibarra. Two outs later, Welch picked up his second RBI of the game with a single.
The Miracle touched the Mets for a run in the second and third innings. Outfielder Steven Liddle picked up his first hit in a Miracle uniform in the second with an RBI single to score Nate Hanson. Chris Herrmann continued his hot start with a run-scoring triple down the right field line.
Taking control of the game in the fifth, the Mets tagged Miracle pitcher Shooter Hunt for four runs. The Mets used a pair of sacrifice flies, a throwing error by Hunt, and and RBI single by Welch to take a commanding seven-run lead.
The Miracle (4-1) take the diamond for game two of a three-game set with the Mets (4-1) at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.
