Prep Report: Unearned runs hand Gators 7-1 win

By Staff | Apr 15, 2011

Island Coast struck for four unearned runs in the first-inning and sophomore Tanner Renegar made them priceless with a pitching gem.

Renegar scattered four hits and struck out three over six innings as the Gators zapped Fort Myers 7-1 Thursday night in the first round of the Bud Roth Memorial Tournament at Terry Park.

Kyle Harding started the seventh inning in relief, but struggled with his control and surrendered an unearned run. Harding gave up a leadoff single, picked the runner off first base, then walked the next two hitters.

After a fielder’s choice forceout at second base, Sam Lefkowitz hit a towering fly ball down the right field line. The potential third out was dropped, allowing the run to cross the plate. A walk loaded the bases, but Harding induced a groundout to end it.

“Tanner pitched well, only allowed three hits,” said Gators coach Clinton Montgomery. “He kept his pitch count low so we could save him to come back on Tuesday.”

The Gators’ first at-bat became a nightmare for the Green Wave, who committed three errors that led to four runs.

Kameron Gellinger led off the game with a single to left. He stole second base then wound up on third base with one out on Cole Ondrejka’s single to left. Ondrejka took off for second base and the throw from Green Wave catcher Hunter Tyo sailed into center field allowing Gellinger to score and Ondrejka to take his place on third base.

Chase Vogelbach sent a run-scoring single to left. Jordan Moody sent a hard smash up the middle and beat the throw to first for the inning’s fourth single.

Vogelbach stole third base and scored on the overthrow with Moody landing on third base himself. Moody scored as Ryne Manka reached first on the Green Wave’s third error of the inning.

The Green Wave coughed up another run in the third inning despite tagging out two Gators runners on the bases. Moody, who walked and stole second base, later scored on a wild pitch.

The Wave’s brutal defense continued in the fifth with the Gators tacking on two runs courtesy of three more errors. Vogelbach wound up on second base when his fly ball into the right-center gap was dropped. He went to third on a deep fly ball and scored with two out when F.J. Corso’s high bouncing ground ball skipped off the shortstop’s glove into left field.

After stealing second base, Corso came around to score on the third error, a wild throw at first base on Randy Petito’s ground ball.

“We came to this tournament hoping to play some unfamiliar out-of-area teams, but it did not work out that way,” said Montgomery. “We’ve had a hot start (17-3) and it’s important for us to finish the season on a high note going into the district tournament.”

In other tournament games Thursday, Bishop Verot pounded Palmetto Ridge 18-3 and Naples stunned Mariner 8-4.

Naples rocked Mariner pitcher Kevin Cavanagh for four runs in the fourth inning to open a 6-1 lead. Walter Cleary relieved Cavanagh (3-1) for the final three innings.

The Tritons (14-7) rallied to cut three runs off the deficit in the sixth inning, but the Eagles sealed the victory with two runs in the seventh.

Island Coast collides with Cypress Lake at 4 p.m. Friday in the second round of the tournament while Mariner faces Barron Collier at 7 p.m. Verot and Naples meet at 7 p.m.

The tournament wraps up Saturday at Terry Park.
