Prep Report: Tritons rally for 7-6 win

By Staff | Apr 16, 2011

Kevin Cavanagh and Alex Santana helped boost the Mariner Tritons to a 7-6 come-from-behind victory over Barron Collier Friday night in the second round of Bishop Verot’s annual Bud Roth Memorial Tournament at Terry Park.

The Tritons trailed 4-1 in the fourth inning and 5-3 in the fifth when Santana belted a no-doubt-about-it two-run home run in the fifth inning to tie the game at 5-5.

The Cougars answered with a go-ahead run in the sixth, but the Tritons’ final answer was Cavanagh’s two-run single in the sixth that put them in front for good 7-6. Chris Wolfe (2-for-3, 2 RBI) started the sixth-inning rally with a leadoff single.

Justin Gubelman started on the mound for the Tritons, giving up five runs while striking out six over five innings. Jason Carmichael (5-2) allowed two hits in two innings to close it out and earn the win.

The Tritons (15-7) face Palmetto Ridge at 7 p.m. Saturday in the final round of the tournament.
