Miracle halt skid in 9-1 win Friday night
BRADENTON – The Fort Myers Miracle jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in a 9-1 romp over Bradenton Friday night.
The victory snaps a four-game losing streak and improves the Miracle record to 5-4.
Brad Stillings (1-0) put together the best start of the season so far, allowing one run on five hits in six strong innings to earn the win.
Six Miracle batters had at least two hits on the night, led by Jhonathan Goncalves with a 3-for-5 night. The Miracle finished with a season-highs in several offensive categories, including runs (9), hits (15), and extra-base hits (5).
It was a full team offensive showing as every player contributed at least one hit or RBI on the night.
After Nick Romero doubled home two runs in the first, Chris Herrmann smacked a solo home run to right for the early 3-0 lead.
Anderson Hidalgo blasted a solo homer in the second, his first home run in a Miracle uniform.
The Miracle pushed across one run in the third, three in the sixth and capped it with one run in the seventh.
The bullpen continued its impressive showing with three scoreless innings to close out the game. Walter Ibarra stuck out three in two innings and Matt Tone pitched a scoreless ninth for a bullpen that has pitched eight scoreless innings in the series, allowing just one hit.
Combined with five strikeouts by Stillings, the Miracle struck out a total of nine batters, a season high.
The win is just the second for the Miracle in team history at Bradenton’s McKechnie Field. They are now 2-9 since the Marauders’ inaugural season in 2010.
The Miracle send right-hander Matt Schuld to the mound at 7 p.m. Saturday to try and pick up their first-ever series win in Bradenton (5-4).
