By Staff | Apr 17, 2011

The Island Coast Gators erupted for nine runs on six hits in the fifth inning to plaster South Fort Myers 13-3 in six innings Saturday in the championship game of the premier division of Bishop Verot’s annual Bud Roth Memorial Tournament at Terry Park.

The Gators, who won two of their three games in the tournament, were declared the winner by giving up fewer runs than South Fort Myers, which also was 2-1 in the tournament.

Island Coast’s Jordan Moody was selected the division’s MVP and named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Tanner Renegar.

The rest of the division all-tournament team includes: Joey Walker and Reyes Ramone of South Fort Myers, Jay Jenkins and C.J. Price of Seacrest, Casey Gibson of Cypress Lake, Alex Mata of Riverdale and Brendan Sanger of Fort Myers.

South Fort Myers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Gators tied it up in the fourth. The nine-run uprising in the fifth sealed the victory.

The Gators connected for 12 base hits, led by Cole Ondrejka (3-for-3, 1 RBI), two hits apiece by Taylor Renegar and Kameron Gellinger and a two-run, pinch-hit double by Ryne Manka. Randy Petito added a two-run single and drew a bases-loaded walk to finish with three RBI.

Taylor Renegar (3-0) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out eight. Six of the strikeouts came in the last three innings when he retired nine straight Wolfpack batters to close it out.

The Gators (18-4) host Riverdale at 6 p.m. Tuesday on Senior Night and visit Mariner on Thursday.
