Bats go cold, Miracle fall 4-1 to Mets

By Staff | Apr 18, 2011

PORT ST. LUCIE – Unable to carry over the offensive momentum from the Bradenton series where they scored 25 runs in three days, the Fort Myers Miracle instead managed just four singles in a 4-1 loss to the St. Lucie Mets Sunday.

Mets right-hander Matt Harvey improved to 3-0 on the season by allowing just one unearned run in five solid innings. Harvey, who was the New York Mets’ 2010 first round pick, now has tossed 16 innings without allowing an earned run in his pro debut.

The Miracle took an early 1-0 lead in the first as Nick Romero walked with two outs and went to third on Nate Hanson’s single. With Chris Herrmann at the plate, a passed ball by catcher Juan Centeno allowed Romero to score the unearned run.

The Mets scored three runs off Miracle starter Kane Holbrooks in the third. Rylan Sandoval doubled and Cesar Puello singled to set the table for Matt Den Dekker, who tripled to the left field wall to drive in both runs. Den Dekker scored on the play as the relay throw to third went into the St. Lucie dugout.

Holbrooks (0-2) gave the Miracle seven strong innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) on seven hits, but took his second loss of the year.

The Mets tacked on their fourth and final run in the eighth inning against Miracle reliever Dakota Watts. With Wilmer Flores at first, Stefan Welch tripled down the first base line to put the Mets up 4-1. The Mets totaled nine hits on the day, with six of them going for extra bases.

Jeff Kaplan pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his fifth save of the year.

Hanson extended his team-leading hitting streak to eight games with the first-inning single. After putting together 42 hits in the three-game series against the Marauders, the Miracle put only one man in scoring position after the first inning against the Mets. The Mets (10-1) lowered their FSL-leading ERA to 1.98.

The Miracle (6-5) will try and snap the Mets’ nine-game winning streak at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
