FGCU softball drops two to Jacksonville
Jacksonville’s Sarah Sigrest pitched a one-hitter in game one to beat FGCU 8-0 in five innings Monday night an open an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader sweep. FGCU also dropped game two 5-2.
FGCU (28-24, 11-5 A-Sun) drops the Eagles four games out of first-place with four games remaining on the schedule.
Eight Jacksonville players recorded a hit as the Dolphins tallied eight runs on 11 hits and five walks to win the opener. Sigrest gave up her only hit to freshman Kirsten Bembnowski in the fifth inning, while fanning eight batters en route to her eighth shutout of the season.
FGCU was unable to advance Bembnowski past first base. She was thrown out attempting to stretch her hit to a double.
Redshirt senior pitcher Catherine McDaniel (14-10) was tagged with the loss, giving up all eight runs on nine hits and five walks, while striking out three in 3 2/3 innings. .
In game two, FGCU took a 1-0 lead when Emily Lanier was hit by a pitch with two out s and the bases loaded.
FGCU stranded nine runners on base. Its only other run came on freshman Brittney Garabedian’s solo homer to left field in the seventh inning.
The Eagles stay in Jacksonville to play North Florida at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
