Prep Report: Seahawks roll past Panthers

By Staff | Apr 19, 2011

Cape Coral and South Fort Myers won District 4A-11 softball tournament first-round games Monday night at Northwest Softball Complex to extend their seasons at least one more night.

South Fort Myers, the No. 9 seed, knocked off Estero 4-2 to advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal round against top-seeded Lemon Bay.

The Seahawks, seeded No. 7, had little trouble getting past Cypress Lake 13-3, earning a quarterfinal round spot Tuesday against No. 2 seed Ida Baker.

Riverdale and Fort Myers square off in another quarterfinal match along with North Fort Myers and Mariner. All games start at 7 p.m.

The Seahawks (9-16) took advantage of walks, Panthers errors and wild pitches to score four runs in the third inning and eight in the fourth inning.

Pitcher Brenna Harkins baffled the Panthers at the plate, tossing a five-inning no-hitter while striking out six.

Kristi Maselter led the Seahawks with three base hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. Mallory Gerrero had two hits, including a triple, and Amanda Hurley contributed a pair of hits with one RBI. The trio accounted for seven of the team’s nine total hits.

The Seahawks had not played a game since a 6-0 loss to Ida Baker 11 days ago.

“We’ve been practicing, so we were not completely off our game,” said Seahawks coach Amy Petruska. “Of course, it’s different going into a game than into practice.”

The Seahawks scored four of their runs on wild pitches – one in the second, another in the third and two more in the fourth.

“We have to come ready to play tomorrow night,” said Petruska. “We have to play good defense and come up to the plate swinging the bats and put the ball in play.”
