Prep Report: Baker, North win 4A-12 quarterfinals

By Staff | Apr 20, 2011

Daring baserunning by Sierra Myers produced two runs and Jessica Nuccio’s RBI double clinched a 3-1 victory for Ida Baker over Cape Coral Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round of the District 4A-11 softball tournament.

In the other quarterfinal games at Northwest Softball Complex, North Fort Myers came from behind to clip Mariner 7-6, top-seeded Lemon Bay routed South Fort Myers 10-0 and Riverdale upended Fort Myers 4-3 in nine innings.

Lemon Bay collides with Riverdale in one semifinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday while Baker (22-3) faces North Fort Myers in the other. The winners play for the district championship at 7 p.m. Friday.

Myers drew a leadoff walk to open the third inning and stole second with one out. Katie Rieser flied out to left with Myers tagging and taking third. Louie Ross drove Myers in with a hard smash off the third baseman’s glove for a single.

The Seahawks (9-17) tied the game in the fourth with an unearned run. Mallory Gerrero led off the inning by reaching on an infield error. She took second on a groundout and headed to third on a wild pitch, but an errant throw sailed into the outfield allowing Gerrero to trot home.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the fifth with Myers scoring an unearned run. She led off the inning by beating a throw to first for an infield single. After Shanelly Brown sacrificed her to second Rieser grounded out to shortstop, but Myers raced to third on the play at first. An errant throw across the diamond to third sailed into foul territory allowing Myers to score what proved to be the game-winning run.

The Seahawks tried to knot the game again in the sixth inning when Kristi Maselter reached on Baker’s third defensive error. Gerrero laid down a sacrifice bunt that set off a bizarre play. Maselter rounded second base too far and was caught in a rundown between second and third to turn Gerrero’s sacrifice into an inning-ending double play.

The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the sixth when Hannah Kelly singled to left to lead off the inning. Kelly scored from first one out later on Nuccio’s double to the gap in left-center. Nuccio finished 3-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

Amanda Hurley led off the Seahawks’ seventh with an infield single. With one out, Hurley was forced at second on a fielder’s choice ground ball by Clara Mediano. A walk and the Bulldogs’ fourth defensive error loaded the bases with two out, but Jenn Le struck out to end the game.

Bulldogs sophomore Maddy Peres (21-2) earned with win with a two-hitter and struck out 10.

“I’ll take the win, but we have to be more disciplined on defense,” said Bulldogs coach Morgan Klare. “Regardless who we play (in semifinals) we have to play to our potential, not theirs. A win (Wednesday) allows us to play next week.”

Mariner opened a 5-0 lead on North, thanks to a three-base error in the Red Knights outfield. With the bases loaded in the third inning, Mackenzie Hunt (2-for-4) smashed a ground ball through the infield that rolled through the left fielder all the way to the fence, resulting in four runs on the play.

The Red Knights rallied to trim three runs off the deficit in the fourth inning, but the Tritons (12-11) went back up 6-3 in the fifth.

North then rallied for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for the first time, 7-6. Allie Kennedy drove in the tying run in the sixth and Liz Hernandez added a two-run single.

Mariner went down in order in the seventh to end it.

“This was the first time this year we won ugly,” said Red Knights coach Keith Gibson. “Defensively we were awful. We did not defense the bunt very well. All of Mariner’s runs were unearned.”
