Hanson’s slam lifts Miracle
With one out, the bases loaded, the game tied 5-5 and a one-strike count, Fort Myers Miracle first baseman Nate Hanson slugged a walk-off grand slam off Bradenton reliever Diego Moreno to claim a 9-5 series opening victory Wednesday at Hammond Stadium.
In a game with multiple lead changes, the Marauders pushed a run across in the first when the first three batters reached base against Miracle starter Brad Stillings. Bradenton’s Aaron Baker picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Miracle answered in the bottom of the first with a run-scoring double by Chris Herrmann to center field.
Bradenton regained the advantage with two runs in the top of the second with an RBI groundout off the bat of Elevys Gonzalez and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Benji Gonzalez.
The Miracle added a run in the bottom of the third on Reggie Williams’ sacrifice fly, but the Marauders regained a two-run lead in the top of the fifth. The Miracle gained its first lead in the fifth on Danny Rams’ three-run triple.
The Miracle turned to reliever Bruce Pugh in the eighth inning, but the Marauders tied the game at 5-5. Pugh pitched a scoreless ninth to set the stage for Hanson’s heroics.
The Miracle (8-6) host the Marauders (6-8) Thursday night.
