Seminoles complete sweep of Eagles
TALLAHASSEE – In the finale of the two-game series with No. 8-ranked Florida State, the FGCU Eagles dropped a hard-fought game 6-4 Wednesday evening at Dick Howser Stadium.
FGCU (19-19) was the first to light up the scoreboard in its first at-bat. Reaching on a fielder’s choice, freshman Brandon Bednar advanced to third on back-to-back two-out singles by senior Zach Maxfield and sophomore Mike Reeves. With the bases full, a wild pitch by FSU’s Tyler Everett allowed Bednar to cross the plate for the early 1-0 lead.
FSU erased the deficit in the home half of the first when leadoff hitter Devon Travis blasted the first pitch over the wall in left.
Scoring two runs in the second, the Seminoles took a 3-1 lead. A one-out walk and a double put runners on base prior to Travis’ RBI single to left that moved runners on the corners. Sending the ball to right field, Sherman Johnson plated the runner from third on a sacrifice fly to give the ‘Noles a two-run advantage.
In the fifth, the Eagles cut into the deficit off the bat of freshman Sean Dwyer, who connected for a home run over the 25-foot wall in right field to make it 3-2.
A pair of walks and an error to begin the sixth set the table for Reeves, who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to tie it 3-3.
Highlighted by a two-run triple to center, the Seminoles tallied three runs on as many hits to take a 6-3 lead in the sixth.
A solo homer off the scoreboard in left by Eagles senior Tim Roberson made it a 6-4 game in the eighth. It is Roberson’s fifth home run of the season.
After nearly a week on the road, the Eagles return home for a three-game weekend series with Le Moyne College (12-23) beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
