Bullpen, defense shine in 5-4 Miracle win

By Staff | Apr 22, 2011

Nick Romero’s RBI hit in the seventh inning, a quality start by Matt Schuld and shutdown pitching by the bullpen proved successful Thursday night in the Fort Myers Miracle’s 5-4 victory over the Bradenton Marauders at Hammond Stadium.

With the game tied 4-4 in the seventh, Miracle designated hitter Anderson Hidalgo set the table with a leadoff single through the left side. Jhonathon Goncalves laid down a sacrifice bunt and Aaron Hicks’ single put Hidalgo on third base. After Brian Dozier lined out, Romero laced a single into center field to drive Hidalgo home with the game-winning run.

Hidalgo (3-for-3, 3 runs) led off and scored in each inning in which the Miracle produced offense. Romero (2-for-4) knocked in his ninth RBI of the season.

For the second consecutive night, the Marauders struck first with a two-run, two-out single by catcher Ramon Cabrera in the top of the third. The Miracle answered with a three-run inning ignited by shortstop Brian Dozier. With two aboard and one out, Dozier stroked a 1-1 fastball from Bradenton starter Nate Baker off the left field wall for two runs. Dozier stole third and a wild throw eluded Marauder third baseman Elevys Gonzalez, allowing Dozier to score.

Leading 3-2, the Miracle extended the advantage in sixth inning when Hidalgo scored as Hicks hit into a double play. The Miracle’s two-run cushion was erased in the sixth inning on a triple followed by an Aaron Baker’s single.

Manager Jake Mauer turned to the bullpen and right-hander Shooter Hunt. After a walk and a flyout, Hunt limited the damage to just one more run in the sixth on run-scoring fielder’s choice.

Taking the lead back in the seventh on Romero’s single, Dakota Watts replaced Hunt in the ninth after three scoreless innings. Watts walked one, but induced a game-ending double play to nail down his third save. The Miracle turned two double plays and Dozier made several dazzling defensive plays at shortstop.

Hunt (2-0) picked up the win.

With a single in the sixth, Nate Hanson extended his hitting streak to a Miracle and season-best 12 games. Chris Herrmann also kept a streak alive by hitting safely in his eighth straight game with an infield single in the second.

The Miracle (9-6) go for a three-game sweep of the Marauders (6-9) at 7:05 p.m. Friday.
