Prep Report: Tritons shut out Gators, 7-0

By Staff | Apr 22, 2011

The Mariner Tritons closed out the regular season with a crisp 7-0 victory over Island Coast Thursday night at Mariner.

Junior right-hander Jason Carmichael pitched five innings and allowed one hit while striking out six and issuing one walk.

“There is a lot we can use from this game to go into the district tournament,” said Island Coast coach Clinton Montgomery. “We were a bit shellshocked at first, but Carmichael located well. We faced a good pitcher and we can take that into the district.”

Carmichael (7-2) struck out the first three Gators batters looking in the first inning. He retired the first six batters in order, but Randy Petito reached on an error to start the third. He was erased on a routine double play ahead of Nelson Candelario’s base hit to center which proved to be the Gators’ only hit on the night.

Offensively, the Tritons roughed up Gators starter Taylor Renegar right away. Back-to-back one-out singles produced the first run. A balk and two wild pitches with runners on second base contributed to two of the three runs.

With two out and the bases empty, Charlie Klein walked and scored from first on Walter Cleary’s double down the right field line.

“We’ve got to get Taylor off to a better start,” said Montgomery. “His best three innings were his last three innings. With the game getting out of hand early we couldn’t do some of the things we like to do, like small ball, but we did not let it slip completely into a rout.”

The Tritons added a run in the second and three more in the third. Cleary’s two-run home run, his third homer of the season, established the winning margin.

“We played well and had timely hits,” said Tritons coach Steve Larsen. “We played with a certain focus tonight because it was an important game for us. It was important to have a solid performance to go into the district and because of our opponent.”

The Gators (19-5) face LaBelle at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bishop Verot in the District 3A-12 semifinals.

With a four-game winning streak in hand, the Tritons (18-7) open District 4A-11 play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Terry Park. The face the winner between Cape Coral and North Fort Myers, who play Monday, in the quarterfinals.
