FGCU posts 2 shutouts in softball season finale

By Staff | Apr 23, 2011

A first-game one-hitter by redshirt senior Catherine McDaniel and multiple runs scattered across three innings in the nightcap earned the FGCU softball team a pair of shutout victories in its final regular-season games Friday night.

The Eagles (31-25, 14-6 A-Sun) beat Atlantic Sun Conference rival Stetson 1-0 and 7-0 at the FGCU Softball Complex.

McDaniel (16-10) tossed a complete-game one-hitter, while striking out six and giving up one walk. In the final game of her career, McDaniel inherited two runners in the sixth inning of the nightcap, but recorded three straight outs to record the save.

Freshman Kirsten Bembnowski had an RBI-single down the left line, scoring Brittney Garabedian from second in what would be the game-winning run. Garabedian reached on a walk before advancing on a single to left field.

The first seven batters in the FGCU lineup registered a hit with freshman Emily Lanier leading the way going 2-for-2.

Despite leaving 10 Eagles stranded on the bases, Stetson starter Meredith Owen (7-12) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings.

In game two, the teams put zeroes on the board until the fourth inning. A single by Bembnowski and a walk to Lanier put runners on. A wild pitch moved them to second and third before another wild pitch on an intentional walk scored the first run of the game. With Lanier now on third, a single by sophomore Chelsea Yates drove in a run for the 2-0 lead.

Lanier’s two-run single up the middle made it 4-0 in the fifth.

Senior Kelci Breaux (7-8) earned a win in the final game of her career, giving up just one hit and two walks in 2 1/3. innings.

FGCU are not eligible for the conference tournament due to the NCAA reclassifying period until next season.
