Homes saved in 50-acre Lehigh brush fire
Lehigh Acres firefighters returned Saturday morning to mop up a brush fire that began Friday afternoon and burned some 50 acres, at times threatening homes, according to Lehigh Acres Fire Marshal Kenneth Bennett.
He said that units Saturday morning that returned to the scene near 14370 Brian Lane (Green Meadow Rd. area south of SR82) included Lehigh Acres, the North Lee County Strike Team and Division of Forestry. They were there, he said, to monitor and provide additional mop-up operations.
Bennett said the call came for firefighters at 1:48 p.m. Friday.
He said the fire started as a result of an escaped spark from a fire pit and the occupant of the residence where the fire began has been arrested by state investigators.
Before the fire was contained Saturday night, some 50 acres had burned due the heavy brush in the area.
Bennett said four homes were in danger but none was damaged and there were no injuries to anyone including firefighters.
Approximately 30,000 gallons of water were used to fight the fire. On the scene from Lehigh were four brush trucks, four engines, two water tankers, and five command staff personnel.
Division of Forestry sent three tractors, one brush truck, a supervisor, a reconnaissance plane and a helicopter that was dropping water from nearby canals.
The North Lee County Task Force also joined in the effort, sending five brush trucks, a supervisor, one water tanker. The force includes Alva, North Fort Myers, Bayshore, Fort Myers Shores, Cape Coral, City of Fort Myers and Tice.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office closed Green Meadow Rd. to local traffic only until the fire was contained, Bennett said. He also said no home were required to be evacuated.
“The fire was fully contained as of 10:30 p.m. on Friday night and operations were suspended at that time. Due to the dense nature of the burn area, unburned pockets remained inside the control lines,” Bennett said Saturday morning.
“Fire crews on the scene made a good stop before the fire was allowed to cross Green Meadow Rd.,” Bennett said.
