Cranes for Japanese children made by Lehigh students

By Staff | Apr 28, 2011

Students make cranes: Lehigh Acres Middle School students are shown making cranes. Teacher Dana Arhar is shown in the back in the middle.

The students of Lehigh Acres Middle School took on the challenge to make Cranes. Oshkosh B’ Gosh will donate one piece of clothing for every crane they receive. The students of Lehigh Middle saw this as an opportunity to be involved in helping other students and children that were affected by the earthquake and tsunami that recently struck Japan.

The students researched the art of making an origami crane. They are made out of paper and resemble a bird or a crane.

The process began and soon every student was making a crane. There are a few students who have made 50 or more and we have one student that has made 476 cranes. The sponsor and teacher for this event, Dana Arhar, said she was overwhelmed by the number of cranes.

“When I first started this I thought I might get a 100 or so, but was amazed as to how the students exceeded my expectation. I am so proud of all the students that became involved in a sure humanitarian cause,” Arhar said.

Currently the students had made 2,225 by the middle of last week and were trying to reach 3,000 by Easter.
