Miracle lose on homerun
JUPITER – With two outs and the bases empty in the ninth inning, Luis Mateo belted a solo homerun off reliever Bruce Pugh to give the Palm Beach Cardinals a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Fort Myers Miracle Wednesday night.
Pugh (1-1) took his first loss of the year in his seventh appearance. The righty had retired the first five batters he faced, including three via strikeout, before Mateo’s shot that clanked off the top of the left field wall.
The Cardinals (6-14) won for just the second time in five extra-inning games this season.
Both teams plated two runs in the first inning before the starters settled down. Chris Herrmann and Anderson Hidalgo drove in the Miracle runs, but the Cardinals responded with four two-out hits against Miracle starter Matt Schuld, including RBI singles by Ryde Rodriguez and Edgar Lara to tie the game 2-2.
The Cards took a 3-2 lead in the second on Adam Melker’s RBI double.
The Miracle (11-9) tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth when Danny Rams doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an RBI single by James Beresford.
Schuld went five innings, retiring the final 10 batters he faced for the no-decision.
Andrew Albers pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh in relief, before handing the game off to Pugh in the eighth.
The Miracle and Cardinals continue the three-game series at 10:35 a.m. Thursday.
