Several calls made to fire department Wednesday
Residents and business people in downtown Lehigh and some nearby areas Wednesday watched as ashes fell from the sky along with a strong stench of fire.
Fire Marshal Kenneth Bennett of the Lehigh Acres Fire Dept. said the ashes falling and the strong smell came from the big fire in Collier County. They were reported as fire scares when calls were made to the Lehigh Fire Dept.
However, there were several fires that were called in from Lehigh residents, Bennett said.
The following are reports of fires on Wednesday:
April 27, 3:13 p.m., incident was a grass fire at 4300 Block of 5th St SW. Bennett said the cause of the fire was an unsupervised juvenile playing with fireworks. He said the fire burned approximately a quarter acres and one structure was threatened but was not damaged. No injuries reported.
April 27, 3:43 p.m., smoke scare at 2600 Block of 68th St. W. Bennett said the report came from fires burning in Collier County that created smoke that blanketed the Lehigh area.
Another smoke care was reported at 3:59 p.m. at the 1100 Block of Hardy Ave. S. Again Bennett said the smoke was from fires in Collier County.
April 27, 4:33 p.m., a brush fire at 14th St. W and Gunnery Rd. N. Bennett said the cause was accidental, most likely from a vehicles catalytic converter in the high grass. The fire damaged less than an eighth of an acre along a canal right-of-way.
April 27, 4:53 p.m., brush fire at East 18th St. and Hines Ave. N. Bennett said the fire was suspicious and is under investigation. The blaze damaged an area of vegetation around 20 feet by 20 feet.
April 27, 5:56 p.m., brush fire at 4600 Block of Terry Ave. N. Bennett said the cause is under investigation. It damaged an area of around 20 feet by 20 feet of brush.
April 27, 7:54 p.m., brush fire at Balfour and Green Meadow Rd. Bennett said the cause was smoke within burn from fires from last Friday. Damage was within control lines, he said.
April 27, 7:58 p.m., brush fire at East 18th St. and Hines Ave. Cause of the fire was smoke within the original burn.
April 27, 12:19 a.m., a vehicle fire at 1033 Pilgrim St. E. Bennett said the cause is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal. The fire damaged a 2001 Ford Expedition.
April 27, 2:08 a.m., brush fire at 25 Michigan Rd. Bennett said the cause was suspicious and is under investigation and damaged less than a quarter acre.
April 27, 2:22 a.m., vehicle fire at 2502 42nd St. SW. Bennett said the cause was arson to a stolen vehicle, a 2000 Chevy Impala.
