Miracle hang on to win, 4-3

By Staff | Apr 30, 2011

JUPITER – With the potential tying run standing and second base and the winning run at first with one out, Fort Myers Miracle reliever Dakota Watts struck out Rainel Rosario and Alan Ahmedy to preserve a 4-3 victory Friday night.

It is the fifth save for Watts in as many opportunities.

The Miracle (12-10) avoided a three-game series sweep against the Cardinals (7-15), and are now 10-0 when leading after the seventh inning.

The Miracle built a 4-0 lead through four innings, but the Cardinals fought back with a run in the fifth and two in the seventh to make things interesting.

Miracle starter Dan Osterbrock (2-0) got the win, tossing five solid innings. The lefty allowed just one earned run on five hits, striking out four and walking two. Joe Kelly (1-1) took the loss, giving up all four runs (three earned) in four innings, his shortest start of the year.

The Miracle started the scoring in the third. Aaron Hicks led off with a single. After a throwing error on a pickoff play at first, Hicks advanced all the way to third. Brian Dozier walked and Chris Herrmann followed with an RBI single.

Nate Hanson grounded into a double play, advancing Herrmann to third. Nick Romero stepped in and hit a ground ball to first that was misplayed, allowing Herrmann to score.

The Miracle added two more in the third as the bottom of the order provided the majority of the damage. Reggie Williams (2-for-4), Steve Liddle (2-for-4), and James Beresford (3-for-4) all singled, the latter resulting in an RBI. Aaron Hicks flied out to drive in the run that put the Miracle ahead 4-0.

The Miracle head to Charlotte for a three-game series against the Stone Crabs (8-14) starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Charlotte Sports Park.
