Crabs rally to nip Miracle 5-4

By Staff | May 2, 2011

PORT CHARLOTTE – Trailing 4-1 in the ninth inning, the Charlotte Stone Crabs rallied for four runs against Fort Myers Miracle reliever Bruce Pugh for a 5-4 walk off victory Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

After Pugh loaded the bases with no outs, Chris Merrill flew out to center fielder Aaron Hicks for the first out of the inning, but Hicks’ throw to third went over the glove of Nick Romero, allowing an extra run to score, moving the tying run to third. With the score 4-3, pinch-hitter Michael Sheridan doubled down the right field line to score Mark Thomas to tie the game 4-4. Matt Hall then singled into left to finish the improbable come-from-behind victory.

Pugh (1-2) took the loss in his eighth appearance of the year. Stone Crabs reliever Josh Satow (3-1) got the win, tossing a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.

Miracle starter Edgar Ibarra was terrific, allowing just one run on six hits in seven solid innings for the win. Ibarra, who had been used out of the bullpen in his first six outings this season, got into some early trouble but cruised through the middle innings. In the second, the Stone Crabs opened with consecutive singles to put two on with no out. The lefty induced a double play groundout, then a flyout to keep the game scoreless. He then retired 12 straight batters until a one-out single by Matt Hall in the sixth.

Charlotte scored its only run against Ibarra in the seventh. Greg Sexton doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Mark Thomas.

The Miracle put together one of their most impressive offensive efforts of the season, even though they scored just four runs. They had 10 hits against Charlotte, eight of which were for extra bases. The Miracle broke open a scoreless game in the third. Nate Hanson drove in two runs with a double and Romero followed with an RBI triple. They scored the final run in the sixth. Anderson Hidalgo doubled to set up an RBI double for Jhonathan Goncalves.

The Miracle finished the month of April with a 12-11 record and continue with game two of a three-game series with the Stone Crabs Sunday afternoon.
