Miracle win fourth straight

By Staff | May 5, 2011

Kane Holbrooks pitched six strong innings and received solid run support to guide the Fort Myers Miracle to a 6-2 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium.

After providing Holbrooks with only six runs in his first five starts, the Miracle order pushed across six in the first seven innings on eight hits Wednesday night. Holbrooks and Cardinals starter Maikel Cleto returned to the game after a 44-minute rain delay in the top half of the second inning.

The Cardinals scored twice in the third inning with a RBI hit by catcher Audry Perez and a sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Xavier Scruggs. With a 2-0 lead, Cleto appeared untouchable through the first four innings while heating up the radar gun. In the fourth, Cleto was clocked at 100 miles per hour.

Despite his high velocity, Cleto was tagged for a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when the Miracle scored without the benefit of a hit. Ramon Santana and Jhon Goncalves walked then Aaron Hicks laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Reggie Williams lifted a fly ball to center to score Santana from third.

In the sixth, the Miracle added two more. With two on and two out, Santana drove a fastball into the gap in right-center to score Anderson Hidalgo and Steve Liddle. Santana’s two RBI put the Miracle on top, 3-2.

The Miracle scored three runs with a run-scoring single by Williams and a two-run hit by Danny Rams, who finished 3-for-4 with two RBI.

Holbrooks (1-0) picked up his first win of the season. Reliever Blake Martin threw a scoreless final three innings and recorded his first save.

The Miracle (16-11) go for the three-game sweep Thursday night at Hammond Stadium.
