Pirates, Red Sox play for county title
Hancock Pirates pitcher Jordan Zorbas certainly was Greek to the Cape American White Sox Saturday.
The 12-year-old right-hander was nearly untouchable while the defense and the bottom of the batting order produced big in leading the Pirates to a 4-1 victory in the semifinals of the Little League (Majors) Lee County Championship at Buckingham Park.
The result is a date with the Cape American Red Sox in the championship game Monday night at 6:30 at Fleishman Park. The Red Sox beat the SFM Phillies 5-1 in Saturday’s other semifinal game to reach the title game.
Zorbas pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing just one run, two hits and four walks while striking out 10 before reaching the 85-pitch limit.
Nick Lamourex got the last four outs for the save, retiring the potential tying run to end it.
“Jordan pitched a fantastic game. He struck out all those batters and allowed only two hits,” said Pirates coach Kurt Donaldson.
“I did better in the first two innings and loaded up after that,” Zorbas said.
His only danger came in the top of the fourth with the Pirates up 2-0. Luke Endsley led off with a single. Two batters later, pitcher Steven Grigiski singled.
The throw went to third. A wild throw to second as Grigiski tried to advance went into center field. Endsley scored. Grigiski also tried to score, but Korey Besse relayed it to Ricky Montoya who threw to catcher Dylan Bloss to nail Grigiski at the plate to keep the lead intact.
“There was a great relay from second and tag at home. These games usually come down to one play,” Donaldson said.
It also came down to the bottom of the Pirates lineup where tournament rules state everyone on the team bats. It produced a pair of runs in the third and some insurance in the fifth.
Logan Richardson started the third with a double off White Sox starter Grigiski. Three batters later, No. 12 batter David Blanco doubled him home to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Lamourex then singled home Blanco to make it 2-0.
With the score 2-1 in the fourth, Besse drove home Donnie Goodman with an RBI single to make it 3-1.
In the fifth, Montoya singled. Two batters later, Michael Barnes singled off White Sox reliever Wade Williamson for an RBI to make it 4-1.
“All tournament long the bottom of the order has hit like gangbusters. They’ve been the key,” Donaldson said.
Besse and Blanco each had two hits for the Pirates, while Endsley had two of the three White Sox hits.
Grigiski pitched well in defeat, going 4 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with 10 whiffs.
