Miracle hang on for 5-3 win
JUPITER – Fort Myers Miracle starting pitcher Matt Schuld held the Jupiter Hammerheads scoreless through five inning, and the bullpen held off a late rally to hang on for a 5-3 victory Monday night.
After reliever Jhon Garcia loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, Miracle manager Jake Mauer called in Dakota Watts to clean up the mess. Watts induced a game-ending double play to get the Miracle off the hook.
Schuld (1-0) picked up his first win with the Miracle in his 12th career appearance, putting together one of the best performances by a starter all season long. The right-hander is the first pitcher to allow no earned runs in a start this year, scattering just three hits in five solid innings.
The Miracle jumped on Jupiter starter Rob Rasmussen in the first inning, scoring two runs on a pair of hits and walks. Nick Romero got the Miracle on the board with an RBI single, and Anderson Hidalgo followed with an RBI fielder’s choice groundout to open a 2-0 lead.
The Miracle added three runs off Rasmussen in the fourth. Aaron Hicks doubled home two with the bases loaded and James Beresford followed with a sac-fly RBI to left.
Leading 5-0 in the seventh, the Hammerheads ended the shutout with a two-out RBI single by Jeff Dominguez off reliever Matt Tone. The Hammerheads made things interesting by scoring two runs in the eighth off Garcia.
In the ninth, Garcia stayed in the game and gave up a leadoff double to Kyle Jensen. After hitting his second batter of the night and walked another to load the bases, Watts was summoned from the bullpen. It is the sixth save of the season for Watts.
The Miracle (19-12) took two-of-three from the Hammerheads (16-15), also earning their fourth straight series win. It also is the final game against the South Division for a few weeks. The Miracle play their next 24 consecutive games against North Division teams.
The Miracle return home to host the Dunedin Blue Jays in a four-game series beginning Tuesday night.
