HRs carry Jays past Miracle, 7-1

By Staff | May 12, 2011

For the second straight game, the Fort Myers Miracle took an early 1-0 lead, but the Dunedin Blue Jays slugged a pair of two-run home runs to post a 7-1 victory Wednesday at Hammond Stadium.

More than 2,600 students and teachers from schools in Southwest Florida attended the game that started at 10:35 a.m. on the annual Education Day.

After the Miracle grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Nate Hanson’s RBI groundout, the Blue Jays claimed the lead in the fourth against Miracle starter Edgar Ibarra and never looked back. After a leadoff single by Kevin Ahrens, Brad Glenn doubled to the left field wall to score the runner, tying the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Sean Ochinko’s two-run home run to left to put the Jays ahead 3-1.

In the next inning, Glenn hit his second homer of the series, a two-run shot off of Ibarra giving the Jays a 5-1 advantage.

Ibarra (0-1) left the game shortly after surrendering Glenn’s home run, lasting 4 2/3 innings for his first loss of the year. He gave up five earned runs on six hits, struck out three and walked three.

Blue Jays starter Deck McGuire (2-2) struggled with his control, walking four in five innings, but gave up just two hits and one earned run for his second win of the year.

It was the Miracle’s worst hit output of the season, managing just three hits on the day. They have just three runs on 12 hits in two games against the Jays in the current series.

The Miracle (19-14) continue the series with the Blue Jays (16-17) Thursday night at Hammond Stadium.
