Miracle snap skid with 4-1 win in Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH – Fort Myers Miracle starter Matt Schuld was perfect through the first four innings, leading a staff that posted a season-high 16 strikeouts in an impressive 4-1 win over the Daytona Cubs Saturday night.
The win snapps a four-game losing streak for the Miracle, who were swept at Hammond Stadium by the Blue Jays earlier in the week.
Schuld (3-0) carved through the Cubs lineup in six impressive innings for his third win of the year. After setting down the first 12 batters in a row, six via strikeout, the Cubs broke though with three hits in the fifth and their only run of the game on a two-out RBI single by Michael Brenly. It was the only three hits the righty would allow, and finished with a staff season-best nine strikeouts on the night.
After a 33-minute rain delay, the Miracle jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning against Daytona starter Brett Wallach. James Beresford got things going with a single. Brian Dozier followed with an RBI triple. Nick Romero then drove in Dozier on an RBI groundout.
The Miracle went down 14 in a row after Dozier’s triple in the first. The two pitchers combined the sit down 26 straight batters from the end of the first to the start of the fifth inning.
Leading 2-1 in the sixth, the Miracle tacked on their final two runs. Steve Liddle and Aaron Hicks hit back-to-back doubles to open the inning, and Romero’s two-out RBI single made it a 4-1 game.
The Miracle bullpen continued the strikeout dominance after Schuld departed, with Blake Martin fanning four Cubs hitters in two scoreless innings of relief, and Bruce Pugh struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his sixth save of the year. Eight of the nine Daytona hitters struck out at least once, with Junior Lake, Matt Cerda, Mike Burgess and Logan Watkins each striking out twice, while Justin Bour and Evan Crawford whiffed three times apiece.
The Miracle (20-16) continues their series against the Cubs (25-11) Sunday at 5:35 p.m. from historic Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
