Verot wins on Boyd’s two-hitter

By Staff | May 19, 2011

Senior Hudson Boyd pitched a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts Wednesday to help lead Bishop Verot to the state championship baseball game for the third time in school history.

Boyd’s gem, blemished only by five walks, was backed by clutch hits from Senior Zach Haefeli and junior Nick Rivera as the Vikings shut out Mount Dora 6-0 in the Class 3A state semifinals in Port St. Lucie.

The Vikings (27-4) play Pensacola Catholic, a 5-0 winner over North Broward Prep, for the championship at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Vikings last won a state baseball title in 1994 and lost in the 2000 finals.

Haefeli put the Vikings (27-4) on the board early with a two-out, two-run bases-loaded single in the first inning. Both runs were unearned because of a fielding error by the Hurricanes (21-6)

In the fifth inning, Rivera added an RBI double down the left field line, the game’s only extra-base hit. Haefeli’s sac-fly to left put the Vikings up 4-0. Again both runs were unearned.

In the sixth, after Dan Vogelbach was walked intentionally to load the bases with two out, Rivera came through with a two-run single to left to provide the final margin of victory.

Boyd (12-0), who did not give up a hit after the second inning, walked the leadoff batter in the seventh, but coaxed two pop flies and struck out the final batter to seal the win.
