Miracle win first game in Tampa, tied for first
TAMPA – Fort Myers took an early 5-0 lead, starting pitcher Logan Darnell tossed five-plus innings of shutout baseball, and the Miracle went on to beat the Yankees 6-3 Sunday.
With the win, the Miracle now have won six in a row, matching their longest winning streak of the season.
Ramon Santana got the scoring started in the second, blasting a two-run home run against Tampa starter Josh Romanski. Later in the inning, Brian Dozier hit a sharp grounder to short, with an error by Walter Ibarra allowing Aaron Hicks to score.
Up 3-0, the Miracle got their final run against Romanski in the sixth, as Nate Hanson clobbered a double to score Brian Dozier. Romanski (3-3) took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) in six innings.
The Miracle tacked on single runs in the seventh and ninth against the Yankees bullpen, and went on to outhit Tampa 15-to-6 in the game.
Darnell (2-0) was terrific in his second start with the team, allowing no runs and two hits in 5 1/3 innings of work for the win. The lefty cruised through the game until allowing consecutive walks with one out in the sixth to end his night. Reliever Jhon Garcia came in and got an inning ending 6-4-3 double play.
The Yankees got their only runs off Garcia in the 7th on a two-RBI triple from Kelvin Castro and a fielder’s choice groundout by Emerson Landoni.
Andrew Albers pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for his first save in the Twins organization. He struck out three and gave up just two singles.
With the St. Lucie Mets losing Sunday, the Miracle (26-18) are now tied for first place in the Florida State League’s South Division standings.
The series continues Monday night at George Steinbrenner Field.
Right-hander Tom Stuifbergen (0-3, 7.71) will make the start for the Miracle.
